  • WGT 19th Hole: IOBannon, "The Streak"

    06 Feb 2015

We're kicking off a new series called, "WGT 19th Hole," focused on featuring the players, personalities and country clubs that make up the global WGT community.

IOBannon - They Call Him "The Streak"

According to IOBannon (aka Isaac O'Bannon), his morning ritual looks something like this: grab bite to eat, check work email, and play round of golf on WGT.

The Norman, Oklahoma-based website content editor and technology PR consultant is currently on a streak of more than 589 consecutive days played, and even though he says he loves the game, it hasn't always been easy to squeeze the rounds in.

"My job includes occasional travel to conferences and other events. So over the year and a half that I've been on this consecutive day streak, I've played on work trips to several states, including Texas, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Wisconsin, Florida and Illinois. I've also managed to keep playing while on vacations that took me through another half dozen states, a trip to Puerto Rico, and even on a Caribbean cruise." (He did note that on some of those days, he was only able to play and finish a closest-to-the-hole game, but that was enough to maintain the "consecutive days played" streak.)

A WGT player since June 2013, Isaac says he quickly advanced to higher tiers (now a Tour Legend) by playing frequently and joining a WGT Country Club that included a few people he knew in real life, as well as players from around the world.

"The friendly competitiveness of the game is exciting, and there's nothing like coming from behind to beat your buds. Joining a Country Club is a great way to learn valuable tips from players who've been on WGT for years. From putting skills and advice, to club selection and tournaments for only members of your club, they help make the game more of a community of friends."

Why is the Consecutive Days Played streak important to you?
IOBannon: It's partially about bragging rights and being able to tell people that I've played this game so many consecutive days, even while doing real-life things, like taking my fiancé on a cruise, or to visit my family on the other side of the country. It also helps my country club, since it lets me contribute 880 XP points to the club every day (plus bonus XP).

What are the most important tips you'd give new players?
    IOBannon:
Join a country club that is right for you. There are thousands of them, so if you don't like the first one you join, look around. You'll meet people from around the world who enjoy the game and can give you great tips. Also, whether you buy credits or earn them, use them wisely – WGT has some really great balls that offer good spin and more distance.

What would you tell new players NOT to do?
    IOBannon:
Don't quit a multi-player game (on purpose) by just closing the game on your computer or device. Wait until your turn and select forfeit from the menu. Just quitting abruptly is rude, because it makes the others wait a couple minutes to see if you're coming back. It also hurts your reliability ranking color when playing future games, and denies the other players of some XP points. Just keep playing through bad rounds. That's the meaning behind the name of our Country Club, Seeing it Through.

    Any last words of advice?
    IOBannon:
Enjoy the game and all of the variations, from playing a solo game, a live multi-player round, one of the WGT stroke play tournaments or the tournaments in your Country Club. The more you play, the more you'll love WGT. Keep and eye on your average, and save.

  • CC Event #5 and New Improvements

    05 Feb 2015

This weekend, CC Event #5 is ON!

Play CC Event #5 this Sat-Sun 2/7-2/8 to compete for new heart tee markers and flags, and other country club rewards.

This is the first CC Event of the new year and we've made some improvements based on player feedback from earlier CC Events...

More Passes - Special this weekend, CC Passes will automatically regenerate every 4 hours so you can play more games for your club with free passes

More Super Passes - In addition to the Superpasses awarded to your club at the start of an Event, your club will receive 2 additional Superpasses at the start of each Clash you participate in

Scoring - Points are earned per hole, as follows:

    • Double Eagle (3 strokes under par): +50 points
    • Eagle (2 strokes under par): +25 points
    • Birdie (1 stroke under par): +12 points
    • Par (Even par): +5 points
    • Bogey (1 stroke over par): +2 point
    • Double Bogey or worse (2+ strokes over par): +1 point

Participation Bonus - To reward clubs for playing, there is a new point bonus system based on the percentage of club members that play in the Clash, as follows:

    • 25% of club members: +40 points
    • 50% of club members: +100 points
    • 75% of club members: +175 points
    • 100% of club members: +300 points

    Visit Your Country Club Page

CC Events allow WGT Country Clubs to compete against each other for golf glory and special in-game rewards. The club that earns the most total points from their Clashes wins.

Each Event is made up of Club Clashes that last for a limited amount of time (usually a few hours). When your club is entered in an Event and you start a Clash, you'll get matched with another club close to your skill level, and a timer will show how much time is left in that Clash. Club members from both clubs then play as many rounds as they want during that time, using Club Passes and Superpasses to earn points.

WGT player fmagnets closed out 2014 with a huge win, becoming the first ever WGT Virtual Tour Champion in December, and has kicked off 2015 with a win in the January Bandon Dunes Open.

Shooting 38 and 42 for a combined score of 80, on the par 108 course of par three holes, fmagnets keeps on trucking through the new season opener to take the early lead on the season leaderboard, over fellow Tour Legends DrShelby and tinybo (2nd place), stevenharkin and WaLk0fLiFe (4th place), and poldimaier (6th place).

The top 70 scores in each tier of the tournament have all earned a cut of the 200,000 WGT Credit purse this month, to start their overall season earnings.

  • 2015 WGT Virtual Tour Improvements

    03 Feb 2015

Based on lots of WGT player feedback, we're making some improvements for the 2015 Virtual Tour...

    • More Champions – This year will be divided into 4 shorter seasons, with 3 monthly tournaments each including 2 Tour events and 1 Major event
    • More Competition – Monthly Tour events will still include 1 unlimited play round and 1 single-play round, but each Major event will now include 1 unlimited play round and 2 single-play rounds
    • Current Tiers – The season leaderboards will now be updated at the end of every monthly tournament and include players based on their current Tier, to be more fair to players across tiers
    • Credit Prizes – Prize purses will continue to be 200,000 WGT Credits for monthly Tour events and 400,000 WGT Credits for each Major event, which is a total of 3,200,000 in prizes planned for 2015
    • Tier Prizes – Prize purses will be shifted even more to the higher Master/Tour Master and Legend/Tour Legend tiers, with smaller purses for the Pro/Tour Pro tiers as most of those winners tier-up quickly anyway
    • Season Standings – Champions will be based on the season standings after each 3-month quarter, with a final match streamed live on Twitch.TV, so there will be 4 Quarterly Champions for 2015
    • Quarterly Championships – The top 2 Tour Legends after each 3-month quarter season will compete in a 2-player match play Quarterly Championship that players must stream live on Twitch.tv for an additional winner-take-all 10,000 WGT Credit prize
    • Golf Channel – WGT Virtual Tour scores will continue to stream live on Golf Channel TV and golfchannel.com, and champions will be interviewed on Golf Channel as well
    • Schedule Changes – Some schedule changes were required: Pinehurst No. 2 is now a Major in June, Bethpage Black has been added for October, and Pebble Beach (full stroke play) has been moved to the final Major in December
    • Fair Play – WGT will increase monitoring of Virtual Tour standings for any violation to WGT terms and service, including players creating multiple accounts to win at lower tiers, or using third-party software that impacts the swing meter, etc.
