It seems I am forced to play with others which I do not always want to do. Surely it's possible to just play a solo practice round. What am I missing here?
Sure, the settings for the single player on your left side of the game window. Just click, select course/settings and off you go :)

Pick 'Stroke Play'
Pick a course.
Then change to 'practice' and what ever settings you want.
