I was off to a nice start after saving par from 20ft on the 1st and hitting two nice shots on #2 and #5. I used the pin on #6 to stop it, but hit a poor wedge on the following par 5.  #9, #10 and #11 into the wind weren't as much fun though and I tried to play even more aggressive after that, which didn't lead to anything good in the end.

    Corwyn:
Tournament ends tonight, midnight WGT time. Of the contenders, Jeremy is still to play (seems to have had Starters in the bag for a while... practicing hard, perhaps, lol!) and needs a 71 to pip Russ... but Konrad is still in the hunt as well, having posted 72 in R1 (and a 67 would be enough to catch Russ on 139).

    TOURNAMENT ENTRY LINK IS HERE!

Bad luck Konrad... I know the feeling when you start chasing it, and things just get worse and worse. Very hard to pull that off with starters!

Just a few hours left for everyone to finish their second round... including our first-round leader Jeremy (Jerm65). I'm sure Russ wouldn't want to win it on a no-show...

Fun tourney, nice change of pace from trying to birdie every hole

A rough start was my downfall in round 1, +3 thru 3, but was able to right the ship for a +2 finish.

Played my 2nd round yesterday.... much steadier front 9, and finally drained a putt on the 9th to get things rolling.

Unfortunately the last 3 holes were my demise this time, which was a bit frustrating... but overall just glad to survive 36 holes without any glaring errors :)

Look forward to next month !

Corwyn, can I be a cad and ask u to wall post me when quali for Ryder Cup begins.

I played week 8 18 hole Ul but week 9 I withdrew when I couldn't get up to the pin on #5 Pinehurst from 7 yards pin high left, it just kept coming back at me, after 5 attempts I withdrew.

Annoying 'cos I was 2 under and sailing along.

    That's UeL for ya.

Just when you think you have the countback system figured out eh?

Your guess is as good as mine as to why Russ is in second.  I figured my bogey on 18, to finish off a rather adventurous back 9, pretty much tanked it for me.  Live and learn.

(edit: live and learn indeed...apparently it's the score for the final 9-holes that's used for the initial tie-breaker.)

It wasn't quite as good as the first round...but I'll take it any day with the starters.  There wasn't really anything of note, other than birdies on both the long par-3's possibly, and the longest putt was only 12 feet.  Basically playing for par a lot of the time, since I couldn't get anything to hold the green today.  A wedge for a 3rd shot was almost a given.

Had some adventures along the way though.  Headwind on 9 meant not reaching the fairway.  Avoided the ugly stuff at least and salvaged bogey.

Played wayyy too much wind and Red-Lied myself in the front bunker on 12.  More than happy with that bogey.

18-20 Headwind on 14 and I suffered the same fate as micha...barely cleared the canal...but did find some 50-60% "light" brush on the other side as a reward for staying dry.  Again, more than happy with a bogey.

Another headwind on 18 didn't help.  But missing a 10-foot par putt was probably the bigger reason for bogey.   ;-)

Fun stuff, Corwyn.  And thanks a ton for getting this all set up!  There's a rapidly growing number of folks playing in them that really appreciate the effort.

    Cheers!

Wow! What an exciting finish... and such a shame you two don't get to playoff instead!

Looking back at Russ' post on page 10, it looks like his back 9 of 38 compared to your 37 is how you've won the countback. He had had such a strong front 9 (31) that his superb 69 score was vulnerable after all in the tiebreak.

Congratulations to you both on such an amazing close-run battle, and for managing to break par overall, no mean feat with this set-up.

Jeremy is our worthy February winner, and the new reigning Tough-It-Out Champion. Bravo!

I'll update the stats spreadsheet tomorrow (please get any late entries in by noon).

Also, look out for the March edition of the Tough-It-Out Virtual Tour, which will be at Kiawah!

Well, I think that's it for any late entries... and now that the excitement (and agony) of last night's WGT update is (hopefully) over, here's a wrap-up of the February Tough-It-Out Tourney...

    THE FINAL LEADERBOARD: (link here):

    LEADERBOARD PRIZES:

WGTdbloshoe very kindly offered a sleeve prize to each of the top 5 finishers on the final leaderboard. They are:

    2  ColumbusStorm lvl81 Nikes   CONFIRMED

3  fmagnets     lvl61 Nikes  tbc     lvl48 Nikes  CONFIRMED

5  Shankette    lvl90 Black Nikes CONFIRMED

Would these players please reply in this thread by Friday this week to confirm what sleeve Shoe should send you? I will complete this draft list and send to him.

    SPECIAL PRIZES:

    Spreadsheet is here.

Here is a pic of the final standings for these prizes: right-click on the image to enlarge, and keep clicking until you get largest view

Note I've added a highlight in yellow on the box where that player won that category, and highlights in blue if they were next in the standings.

I offered a sleeve prize for:
    1) Highest overall percentage of Greens in Regulation:
Won by fmagnets with 67%, a very impressive total given these wind conditions and quick greens. Closest challengers were Wes and Russ with 58.5%.
    2) Closest overall average distance to pin:
Won by ColumbusStorm with a total of 18.1. bhoese was 2nd with 20.7.

Mags, Russ: let me know if you want something different to your usual sleeve (as noted above).
    -----------------------------

    Other notable achievements:

Low score level 70 or lower (level at conclusion of tourney).

We had no participants at level 70 or lower... boo! We are really hoping that this monthly event can attract some of the newer players on WGT, giving those who may have been using starters for a while to see how they fare against some of the most experienced players around. Next time, perhaps WGT could put up a site-wide pop-up ad for the event or pin a thread post in the Announcements.

Our lowest-level player this time was Bunkeredinsand (lvl72 Master) who toughed-it-out to the finish. Well done!

Number of saves: (total number of 1-putt par saves through 36 holes, as shown on all cards): Several players managed the high number of 7 one-putt par saves across both rounds: Russ, CerinoDevoti, ab1983, and AdamK70.

Most Number of Birdies: Jeremy (Jerm65) took the honor here with a grand total of 10 birdies!

Least Number of Bogies: nobody escaped easily in this event, with 7 being the lowest number recorded, by the 3 top players on the leaderboard: Jerm65, ColumbusStorm and fmagnets

Greatest overall total distance made putts: ab1983 is clearly our starter putter specialist here, with an extraordinary total of 235.87ft of total distance made putts. ColumbusStorm was close behind with 216.24.

Longest putt made: this honor goes to Russ (ColumbusStorm) with a 39ft putt in R2 (as it was supported by the stats scorecard), and just pipped ab1983's 38.2ft putt. However, Ross (GolferDadRB) had a 59ft putt (see this replay) in R1 (but with no card/stats to show).

Least # of Putts: Ianzzz takes the kudos here, somehow getting round in just 52 putts (25/27). Next were our two under-par finishers Jeremy and Russ with 54.

No 3-Putts: No fewer than 5 players managed to avoid a 3-putt: Jerm65, fmagnets, ianzzz, KonradOse, and mmyers0.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you everyone once again for taking part in this event.

This Tough-It-Out challenge will be a regular monthly event through the year. It will run parallel to the VT each month and on the same course. Typically it will fall in the 2nd and 3rd week. Also, I plan to compile the stats of each event into overall yearly Tough-It-Out Tour standings, with prizes on offer for best position in various of these categories.

I'm also considering the potential for a Tough-It-Out UEL Starters Ryder Cup, if there is enough interest, and the timing could work out.

In the meantime, next up, Kiawah in mid-March! Hope to see you all there, and do please help spread the word. Thanks!
