Feb 9th is a very light day for famous U.S. sports personalities, with one notable exception...

1914 - Bill Veeck,Baseball Hall of Fame.  Innovative owner of the Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Browns and Chicago White Sox baseball teams at one time or another.

    Noted for:

    • Having the idea to plant ivy on the walls of Wrigley Field while his Dad was President of the Cubs.
    • Integrating the American League baseball teams by signing Larry Doby in 1947
    • Sending Eddie Gaedel, a midget, to bat for the Indians.  Eddie drew a walk on 4 pitches.
    • Building the "Exploding Scoreboard" at the White Sox Comiskey Park.  The scoreboard would launch fireworks whenever the Sox hit a home run or won the game.
    • Personally welcoming the champion North Elm Little League White Sox team and shaking Andyson's hand at Comiskey Park.

    February 11

1465 - Elizabeth of York, Consort of King Henry VII

Daughter of Edward IV, Sister of Edward V, Niece of Richard III, Wife of Henry VII, Mother of Henry VIII, Grandmother of Mary I, Elizabeth I, and Edward VI, Great Grandmother of Lady Jane Grey. She is the most recent common ancester of all English & Scottish Monarchs that reigned after James VI and I. Consort means wife of reigning King.

1535 - Pope Gregory XIV (Niccolo Sfondrati)

1800 - William Henry Fox Talbot, England

Invertor  of the calotype process of photography. Many of his photos in the 1835-1840 range show interesting and priceless depictions of towns & people of life as it was then. I love looking at them.

1812 - Alexander Stephens, US Confederate Vice President ( see D-Kats question about him, Lincoln & a steamer)

    February 12, 1809 - Kentucky

    Abraham Lincoln

Much is written, but even for those that avoid reading, they owe it to themselves to engage the Bill O'Reilly book "Killing Lincoln". It is a transport of intense fact regarding a sad final chapter to an important story regarding the luminary that kept our country together as one. Of my study and opinion,"Honest Abe" resides shoulder to shoulder with Washington and Jefferson. Enjoy this great day.
