Australians have produced great sporting heroes in golf, cricket, tennis and Rugby Union as well as many other champions in other sporting disciplines. Today however it is difficult to name a sport, other than rugby league, in which they dominate. The decline of their cricketing prowess is remarkable with a likely 4-0 trashing awaiting them in the current ashes series.

This decline is reflected in attendances at sporting events. In both tests so far the Gabba and Adelaide were barely two thirds full and the Barmy Army outnumbered the home support on both final days. Rugby Union internationals and domestic attendances are 40% down on ten years ago. Major golf and tennis champions were last seen in bygone years.

So, Come on Aussie, what is happening on the sporting front? Why are you not competing? Why are you not watching?

They are slowly being taken over by the Spanish! Who are the best at football? Who is the world number one in tennis? From which country are the last three winners of the Tour de France? ...

We haven´t conquered cricket yet, but just wait until we start playing... or at least get to understand the rules lol...

afaik neil robertson is no1 in the snooker - which no one in australia watches by the way :(. cricket we were always going to struggle losing gilchrist, warne, mcgrath, hayden etc. golf we never really had world beaters - maybe ogilvy is the exception there. apart from that we watch afl - pretty much the no1 sport here.
