I started an 18 hole ranked round with an average around 68.1 I shot a 73 and my average dropped to 67.52. How is this possible.

The average is a combination of your average stroke scores minus a factor based on your match play victories. The 74 at Merion was your second best result since turning Tour Pro so your average stroke play went down as a result.

If you were only playing stroke play and had no match play victories your average would actually be in the 70s..

Excuse me to correct you, S.

PK turned TP on Jan. 12th (see activity) and has since played a bunch of rounds from amateur tees on STA plus some on CCC from Pro tees, in total about 43 rounds counting to the TP average, well saturated. This includes 11 scores below 70 from STA.

@TP, there ist an influence of a few Match wins against higher tiers (current average from strokeplay roundabout 70.7), but your description points towards the non-linear behaviour of your saturated average. It comprises your best 25 TP scores, and a new good score will kick out a higher score, dropping the average regardless.

I don't see any 73, you probably had the 74 at MER in mind. Before that, a possible highest score in the mix was a 39/78, and by replacing it, the average would have dropped by 4/25 = 0.16. You say it was more, but you have dropped your average about nine times this week with scores up to 77 - you may have overlooked it sometimes.

And, before you ask, a 67.00 average will safely make you a Master.

Thanks for catching it and correcting me, alosso. I didn't scroll all the way back, mistaking consecutive monthly amateur tournament results as a promotion date. My error.

You're welcome. His is a difficult score history, you can rather tell the latest than the earliest possible point of tier change.

Thank you for your response. That is very enlightening. I just have one more question concerning score avg calculations. If I play a course like let's say Merion where the par for 18 holes is only 70 and I shoot a 72 is that considered for avg calculation to be a 72 or a 74 (2 over pro rated for a standard par 72 course) or to put a more extreme slant on it, if I shoot an 89 on the Best of par 5s is it considered to be an 89 or a 1 under 71

Only the gross score is considered. WGT sees a round of 70 the same no matter what par is.
