I typically play the Srixon ball and have liked it for a long time. I decided to give the Calloway spin vapors a try and am having major trouble with them. It's like I have to learn the game all over again.

I chose them to get a little extra distance and spin for elevated greens and to slow the meter down for my new r9 driver. Well I'm getting that and more than I ever thought. The ball is traveling way past my calculations and the pin. When I have a headwind its like its not even there anymore. I havn't used spin for most of my shots.

Has anybody had this trouble and could help me out. Thanks...Charlie

They do take a bit of getting use to..but stick with it,it will be worth it..Its just my own preference but I prefer the S type as they dont have as much spin as the Z's.

hey b, been playing with the s calloway ball since they came out and haven't used anything else.  i have a good feel for how they play with my clubs and wouldn't want to throw in another brand of ball in the mix.  that would lead to inconsistent shots.

    just my opinion,

It appears to me that full backspin on the Callaways significantly reduces the length of the shot, but you don't need the full backspin on most shots. (I'm also playing the G10 irons.) Result: more complicated shot calculations than with other balls.

I like the Srixons as well - also the GI-SD with 1 dot of "feel". It seemed to me that with all those dots of "feel" with the Callaways I would be hurting my game by forgetting how to hit the ball with a faster meter.

The Callaway spinners are good balls but come with a price for missing. The deviations are harder on you when you miss the ding and spin will definitely affect this just like Zag pointed out. Two things I figured out real quick about spin with them-backspin into a wind exaggerates the distance loss but with the wind it acts like you would think.

Most of the time i use back spin every shot, you know where you stand like that distance wise, i find when you dont use b'spin ball with say 190 yard iron might travell between 200 yards or 192.  With backspin they are constant (but with burners anyway,)my long irons can stop like a wedge.

Here's a rough guide for using backspin, with G'10's. Adjust wind from these yardages.

Club:                                           Distance with backspin  & without (callaways (z))

    64 Zatin  50                                                         47                                           52

     75 yard wedge                                                   72                                          78

    105                                                                      102                                       108

    115 PW                                                          112 (b.s)                              118/119

    130 9i                                                              126/127                               135

    145  8i                                                                142                                     150

    160 7i                                                                  157                                  168

    175 6i                                                                  172                                   184

    190  5i                                                                 187                                     200/202

    200 4i                                                                  197                                    212/214

    215  3i                                                                  214                                    230

To top it all off, here's a rough guide for wind: But these are with higher loft Burners.

    wedges between 50/60 yards add 2/3 yards per 10 m.p.h tailwind, 4/5 yards H'dwind

wedges up to 115, add 5 yards per 10 mph

    between 120 & 145, add 6 yards per 10 mph

    between 145 & 170 add 7 yards per 10 mph

    between 170 & 190 add 8 yards per 10 mph

    between 190 & 200+ add 10 yards per 10 mph

And when you punch a shot, wind will effect the shot by half, so 87 yard punched wedge (105 full swing) will travel 5 yards in 20 mph wind ,not 10 yards like a full swing would

Hope its been useful, REMEMBER this may work 7/10 times, but as i mentioned, its either deviation, bad game physics, inconsistancies with wind or callaways not adding the extra yardage the times it doesn't work, as you'd like to think your 175 yard iron would be 184 without spin, but sometimes when you need it to be 184 it ends up 176.

Chris, thanks for taking the time with your detailed post to help me out. Very much appreciated. How were u able to obtain these distances? By practicing in low wind? Thanks...Charlie

After so many rounds, you get used to coming up short/long due to misjudging wind, so by now you know exactly what club, how much power on meter etc etc for shot.
