I had text inputs in the table data elements, and mistakenly went after those via the tagname method. I was looking for the td background all along, so accessing them via the DOM was what I should have been doing.
This also had nothing to do with the enabling/disabling, that was just poor coding on my part. Curly braces are so crucial, lol.
That's why the order those two lines were killing me. One was getting processed by my looping structure, the second was getting run once because of the forgotten brackets.... Sometimes it's the simplest things.
Oh, and I hate camelCase.......
