I need help figuring out approaching the green with respect to elevation. I was using the universal formula of 1 inch = 1 ft, so therefor 1 ft = 4 yards. but this cant be right.

here is an example of my problem. lets say it is a long par 4, like 410 yrds and i drive into the fairway with 240, so i have 170 yards to the green, but there is a 1 foot (up) elevation.

now to me, i would think you call that 174 yards. am i right? because on some of the CTTP courses there is like 43 ft drops to a 150 yrd green which would make it negative yardage.

so I figure there has to be varying formulas for elevation depending on distance and how do you work that out?

3 feet = 1 yard so if it is 170 yards 6 feet above that equates to 172 yards.....
