    Hey Yall,

I am a bit perplexed and hoping I can get some tips.

This just happened to me so i am a bit frustrated.

    Hole Details:

I was 70 yards out and up hill 10 inches, wind 5 mph against me and hitting out of rough that said 30%-40%. So natually i do the following.

    PW 100yds x 30% = 30 yds.

    100 yds - 30 yds = 70 yds.

So naturally I should be able to swing my club full and it should go 70 yds based on the 30-40% out of the rough. with the pin being up hill and wind against me i feel it should land 3-5 yds and roll out right close to the pin.

Well thats not what happened. My golf hit it 108 yds.

    Can anyone please explain this.

    Thanks,

That's where better spaced wedges would help. I think I would used my 75 yd wedge wi maybe a tad of top spin. You might consider dropping your hybred and investing in 3 wedges to cover the distance below your PW.

I undestand that logic, but that still doesnt answer the 30-40% out of the rough.

Had i used a 75 yd wedge, based on the 30-40% then my wedge should only go 52.5 yds.

I guess my main question is how do you know how far your going to hit out of the rough if there giving you a percentage and its not accurate.

    thanks again for your advice.

Where did you get that advice on rough?

What you describe as the 'natural' way of doing things is far from it.

Here are some great game tips. (Garypinhunters page).

The percent shown for the rough is the amount of the ball is covered. You're going to have to practice a lot to determine how hard to hit it. That's especially so with wedges because the rough has less of an effect on wedges than it does the irons.

In addition to the link above, which has some great information, I would search the forums. Here's a link with a discussion of hitting out of the rough:

    Full shots:  For 20/25 * 1.02 > 30/40 * 1.06 > 40/50 * 1.16.

    Pitch and Punches:  For 20/25 * 1.05 > 30/40 * 1.09 > 40/50 * 1.125

    Flops:  20/25 +1y > 30/40 +2y > 40/50 + 4-5y

    Sand (full shots and punches):  For 20/25 * 1.1 > 30/40 *1.25 > 40/50 *1.35

    Sand (flop shots):  For 20/25 +2y > For 30/40 +8y > For 40/50 + 12y

These numbers change on clubs, ball, backspin, etc., but it's a good place to start.

i always add a 3rd more power of the lower stated lie.  for my irons, i always use FBS, so maybe its different for other spins

So i do my normal calculations then....

lie 20-30%, so i add 7% more power

lie 30-40%, so i add 10% more power
