I was watchin some old Shell's "Wonderful World of Golf". This episode was Seve Balistaros against Paul Ansinger.

It was cool to see the whole course, even if it was only on TV. What a magnificient complex. 360 bunkers.

One thing I wanted to know,,it had a couple giant greens with '2' pins or they called them 'double greens' or something.

What's up with the 2 pins on the green? Do 2 holes share one green or something? Is that the idea?

Enlighten this confused guy on this double green thing.

There are only a few greens at st andrews that don't share a pin with another hole, off the top of my head I know 1, 9, and 18 each have their own.

The greens there are so huge that you would rarely be in the vicinity of the other hole location on the green.

I watched it too, having "played there" for months now. Best Shell's is a really old one at Pine Valley... Gene Littler and Byron Nelson. Here's a St.A layout map

17 is the only "individual" hole at STA I think, as 1 and 18 share a fairway, as do 9 and 10, while all the other holes - as listed above - share greens.

Although actually, thinking about it, 17 technically shares a bit of fairway with 2, so I guess all the holes are connected to another somehow.

    Jack.

On the history page of St.Andrews, http://www.standrews.org.uk/About-Us/History.aspx , you may find the explanation of the double greens. In the beginning, there were only 10 greens and flags, #2 to #9 being used twice, "Out" and "In". During the 19th century, this was changed due to high traffic.

probably mentioned somewhere already as well, but, all the shared greens add up to 18...meaning 5/13=18, 6/12, etc...
