Read Nivlac's great putting guide. (The link is right there in the right-hand column under FAQs.)
Then don't forget to press the SPACEBAR before putting. This will allow you a (usually) less crooked view of the putt from behind the hole. Many players actually prefer putting while looking at the putt from reverse view.
