    my next step in this wgt process; to get a clue as to ho much to adjust for wind and slope.

    who among us has a formula that works?

    lets start with the basics. For example:

    160 yards out hole is 12' downhill and there is a 12mph headwind.

    I've been using the 50% rule, which works sometimes, others it seems way off.

    12' downhill x 50% = 6 (subtract 6 yds from the shot) = 154

    12 mph headwind x 50% = 6 (add 6 yds back on to shot) = 160

    sometimes this works, sometimes it is way off. Any other tips out there?

    You can't use a simple formula for all shots, the trajectory of each club is very unique.  And then once you have every club figured out for full backspin, you get to figure them all out for 3/4 backspin, and 2/3 bs, and 1/2 bs...etc etc etc.  Not to mention each hole has its own individual tendencies.  There are no shortcuts on WGT to become a great player, it really is just through trial and error, developing  experience in all scenarios (wasting a lot of time).

    For your examples, 12' down from 160 yards I might take 2-3 yards off the power.

    12 mph headwind from 160, 6 yds extra power sounds about right, maybe slightly more.

    thanks BIB,

    I know there are a lot of factors involved, and different greens and even different green speeds can change the shot result by quite a bit, I'm just looking for a starting point. Something that will get me in the right area, that I can tweak on a hole by hole basis.

    I've got a good feel for the greens, which ones to approach from the right/left, etc as well as a good idea which ones allow m to stop on a dime, and which run on forever. What I lack is a consistent calculation to be able to start by hitting the green within 3-4 of the pin each time. I'm not talking about a 195 yd prayer to a green that is 45 feet uphill, I'm talking about most approaches where you can expect to be firing at the pin. Sometimes I am right on using the 50% calculation, and then sometimes it is of by 10-12 yards. Seems to be no rhyme or reason to it, lol.

    For Wind Drift , i try to see how much each club is affected by wind at full swing, for easy math lets say the following:

    Your 200yd 3iron drifts 10yds right on a 20 mph east wind @ FULL swing, thats 1/2 yd for each mph wind, and then adjust based on shot length.

    I then assume if i am htting 80% (160yds) of that distance i would get 80% of the drift ie 8 yds. Been pretty consistent but you have to know how much each club drift per mph at FULL swing first and then figure it backwards.

    I use a similiar calculation  for elevation lost or gained per ft  for each club.

    (wasting a lot of time)

    EDIT:

    I tried all the graphs, charts and plotting every shot.  At some point I realized, for me, it was more about feel...just like real golf.  And like real golf, we I'd need to "wasting a lot of time" looking for it.  So, if you don't want to "waste a lot of time" around here, you'll probably play a lot more like me. (smile).

    VanHalenLover:
    160 yards out hole is 12' downhill and there is a 12mph headwind

    Depends on the slope of the green.  I'd say 163 would be a good start.

    I've been using the 50% rule, which works sometimes, others it seems way off.

    12' downhill x 50% = 6 (subtract 6 yds from the shot) = 154

    12 mph headwind x 50% = 6 (add 6 yds back on to shot) = 160

    It's not a bad start, but some simple logic would tell you that if the shot is short, then height changes, whether they are up or down, will affect your shot less because a short shot is falling almost straight down by the end of the shot, whereas a long shot (in neutral wind) will drop at about 45-degrees.

    Wind also affects long shots more, no matter if it is a headwind or a tailwind, and tailwinds barely affect short shots under 50 yards.

    Here's some examples and my guesses... first yardage listed is the difference the height would make to a neutral-wind shot.... +/- in parenthesis after the wind-adjusted yardage is the difference from neutral wind (i.e. 0 wind) that the wind condition made.

    210 yards, 30 ft down -> 198 yards (-12 yards)
    16 mph tailwind? 186 yards (-12)
    12 mph tailwind? 189 yards (-9)
    12 mph headwind? 209 yards (+11)
    16 mph headwind? 215 yards (+17)

    120 yards, 30 ft down -> 116 yards (-5)
    16 mph tailwind? 110 yards (-6)
    12 mph tailwind? 112 yards (-4)
    12 mph headwind? 123 yards (+7)
    16 mph headwind? 125 yards (+9)

    160 yards, 30 ft up-> 174 yards (+14)
    16 mph tailwind? 168 yards (-6)
    12 mph tailwind? 170 yards (-4)
    12 mph headwind? 181 yards (+7)
    16 mph headwind? 184 yards (+10)

    120 yards, 30 ft up -> 127 yards (+7)
    16 mph tailwind? 122 yards (-5)
    12 mph tailwind? 124 yards (-3)
    12 mph headwind? 131 yards (+4)
    16 mph headwind? 133 yards (+6)

    Again, these are just guesses.

    These will be affected by whether or not coming up short is bad or not., and also the slope of the green.

    Also important is how hard you hit the club.  A 100% swing with a club will be in the air longer than a 90% swing with the club above it.  The 100% swing will also create more backspin.
