If the question is actually how many squares and the drawing is correct then the answer is 0! There are no squares! Look closely! They are all rectangles. Not equal side squares.

    alosso:

    I see

.5x.5 squares = 8 (breakdown of the center "1" squares)

    1x1 squares = 18 (4x4=16 making the big "4" square + 2 in the center)

    2x2 squares = 9 (3 rows, offset by 1 vertical, containing 3 each, offset by 1 horizontal)

Would be nice to know how you see more, M. - would elevate the result to 48 56 ;)

Agree to the nos. of 3x3 and 4x4 (combined 5).

    My result is 40 ;)

I think it's just a difference in terminology.  What you're calling .5x.5 squares I'm just including with the larger 1x1's.

At least we came up with the same total.  ;-)

They're squares, at least they measure out that way, on my monitor...maybe it has to do with display setting?

But at least you're thinking outside the box, literally!

That would make your result 26, not 24 :)

And then there are 2 2x2 squares more in your list - to a total of 44!

Here is the 40 for those that favor visuals. The number represent how many of each size there are. Mantis linked a good YouTube video as well.
