  • Guest Blog from Virtual Ketel One Cup Champion PGAbound67

    08 Nov 2011

WGT invited World Golf Tour players to contribute this blog post. As the 2011 Virtual Ketel One Cup Champion, PGAbound67 won a trip for four to play in the Ketel One Cup National Tournament at TPC Sawgrass. PGAbound67 invited three WGT friends to join him on the trip: bulfrog2004, BolloxInBruges, and mrenn29.  What an amazing example of the power of the WGT community and of the Deviations Country Club!

    PGAbound67 (Dan)

Let me start off by giving a big thank you to WGT and Ketel One. We had an amazing time and the memories will last forever. We arrived at the TPC Sawgrass Clubhouse on Friday night for the welcome reception. We were greeted by two Ketel One representatives, who gave us a brief rundown of the events for the weekend – brunch at the clubhouse, followed by a 1:30 P.M. start to the tournament, and then dinner and an awards ceremony directly afterwards. When I got the itinerary, it said there would be a meet and greet with a “golf legend.” I had to ask myself – what classifies one as a “legend”? No, not a 61 average and countless ranked rounds, a real life legend…..I could only think of a few people who are still alive that I'd call a real life legend of golf.

We didn't have to wait long to find out who it was, the Ketel One representative came over to our table with a few welcoming gifts, including a brand new TaylorMade golf bag embroidered with the Ketel One logo, Adidas golf shirts with Ketel One Cup logos, an official yardage book of the course, and a Ketel One Golf flag, signed by the legend we would meet the following night.....Arnold Palmer!

During a tour of the massive TPC Sawgrass Clubhouse, we saw clubs from past champions – a wedge from Tiger Woods, Fred Funk's winning putter, KJ Choi's driver, Stephen Ames' driver. Directly across is The President's Cup Library, which has the President's Cup itself, an awesome sight to see. We called it a night and checked into our hotel room – a suite at the Sawgrass Marriott that certainly did not disappoint.

Saturday morning, the range was setup with Ketel One hitting stations, along with a TaylorMade representative with demo clubs for us to try out. We were greeted with personalized TPC Sawgrass bag tags with our names engraved in them. These were the real deal, all metal with a cutout of the famous 17th hole. Just before teeing off, Fred Funk stepped onto the range and wished us luck. We also caught a glimpse of Natalie Gulbis on the far side of the range doing a photo shoot for her sponsor. And, then the tournament commenced.

    bulfrog2004 (Tad)

Let me start off by first thanking PGAbound67 (Dan) for the invitation to play. Without his victory none of this would have been possible. So thanks for your 57 Dan! Trying to fall asleep Thursday night was damn near impossible, I felt like a kid on Christmas Eve except this time Santa was bringing me a trip to TPC Sawgrass and a round with three of the greatest players on WGT. I would like to thank Ed, Alison, Whitney, and the rest of the Ketel One team. They put on one of the greatest tournaments I have had an opportunity to take part in. To say Ketel One treated us like royalty would be an understatement. Truly, a first class tournament ran by a first class group!

    mrenn29 (Mike)

First off, thanks to Dan for inviting the three of us. It was a pleasure to be invited. I normally don’t fly across the country for a 36-hour stay, but this was a chance to play a world famous golf course. Ketel One went above and beyond my expectations when it came to hospitality. Meeting Arnold Palmer and Fred Funk was unbelievable. The course was in immaculate shape considering they just had a tournament there the week before. Once we teed off, it was a round full of memories – from the first tee to the last putt. Each of us contributed to a great score in a shamble format. Bottom line – I had a blast! Playing real golf with fellow country club members and being able to do it on a course like that is priceless! Thanks to Dan and especially Ketel One!

    BolloxInBruges (Sam)

Like Mike and Tad, I would also like to thank Dan for the great opportunity to meet up with some fellow country club members and play golf. The hospitality that Ketel One and the TPC staff gave us was absolutely top notch. We were all amazed at the opportunity to meet Arnold Palmer and Fred Funk.

The golf action was great – having a chance to get a true feel for the course that we all watch every year during the Players. We all hit some quality shots throughout the day. Mike's shot on 17 was the highlight of the day, it landed about 4 feet past the hole and spun back, stopping about 8 inches short of a hole in one. Tad won the longest drive contest and got a brand new R11 driver for his efforts. Sam's hybrid from 225 yards out on 9 that ended about 25 feet short of the hole was one of his best. For me, the 6i on 8 to 7 feet for a birdie. After all was said and done, we came in 3rd place at -31, each taking home $250 gift cards from TaylorMade! Thanks again to Ketel One for running an amazing tournament. Will certainly be looking forward to the next event on WGT sponsored by Ketel One!

Watch this amazing shot on #17 by Mrenn29!

  • New High-Stakes Ready-Go's

    17 Oct 2011

For over a year now, the Ready-Go tournaments on WGT have grown in popularity with thousands of WGT players now competing in hundreds of Ready-Go tournaments. So, last week, we expanded our Ready-Go tournaments from $1 entry fee to higher stakes tournaments, with $5, $10 and $20 entry fees.

The new Ready-Go Tournaments work the same way. You pick a Ready-Go, pay 100, 500, 1,000 or 2,000 WGT Credits to enter, and then play the course to post your score. Once 50 people have entered and posted scores, that Ready-Go is over, and the winners are automatically notified, typically in about 24 hours.

Ready-Go's have a great payout, with the Top 30 of 50 players earning WGT Credits, and first place paying 6X the entry fee, as follows...

    • $ 1 Ready-Go - 100 credit ($1) entry fee = 600 credits ($6) for first place
    • $ 5 Ready-Go - 500 credit ($5) entry fee = 3,000 credits ($30) for first place
    • $10 Ready-Go - 1,000 credit ($10) entry fee = 6,000 credits ($60) for first place
    • $20 Ready-Go - 2,000 credit ($20) entry fee = 12,000 credits ($120) for first place

As always, you can use your WGT Credits to enter match play challenges and paid tournaments, in our Pro Shop to upgrade your virtual golf equipment and get real-world prizes, or to play more Ready-Go's.

We'll be watching the tournaments closely and adjusting the mix of courses, holes and entry fees for November. Enjoy!

  • Guest Blog from Virtual U.S. Open Champion mrenn29

    18 Aug 2011

WGT invited World Golf Tour player mrenn29 to contribute this blog post. As the 2011 Virtual U.S. Open Champion, mrenn29 won a trip to the U.S. Open at Olympic Country Club in San Francisco next year (see Virtual Open recap).

Hello everyone. First off, I would like to introduce myself, for those whom I haven’t met, my name is Mike. I'm from Long Beach California. I love golf, have been playing for over 30 years and I am 37 years old. I try to get out when I can but we all know work will get in the way of golf.

I joined WGT back in March of 2010. It’s kind of funny how I found WGT, I was bored at work one day playing some kind of card game done thru flash and an advertisement came up on the side of the screen for World Golf Tour, tee up now. So I clicked on it and here I am LOL.

My first impressions of WGT were,WOW! Unreal graphics, famous courses and challenging. My second thought came after I double bogeyed the first hole on Kiawah, I said to myself, boy this game is tough! But I decided to stick with it and after the first month or so I started to see some progress. Then I took myself into the pro shop and decided to buy a wedge. Went back out and stuck a shot from 95 yards on St Andrews. From then on I was hooked! Then WGT decided to put the tier system in. What a challenge this was, but I am open to challenges. I kept practicing and playing with better players. And after over 1,000 ranked rounds later, I found myself hanging in there with some of the game’s best players.

You can usually find me chatting with my fellow Deviation members on IRC (Internet Relay Chat). There you will find some of the best players in the world. I usually am playing with fellow members from the Deviations Country Club. Everyone in the club is a great player and a great person. My personal favorite course is Oakmont. Some may ask why, well I enjoy it because to this day it is still the most challenging course to me on WGT. It can still take a lot of strokes back from me if I am not careful.

Now on to the Virtual U.S. Open. Being that we only had a little over a month or so to really get the feel of Congressional, I went into the open thinking, hey just give it your best shot and see what happens. Well the first round was a decent round of 62 for me. I was very happy with that even though it wasn’t the leader, but I was within 4 strokes after that round, so going into round 2 I knew I would have to go pretty low to have a chance especially with BolloxInBruges (Sam) (see Guest Blog post) up near the top, knowing he is fully capable of firing another round even lower.

So I teeed it up, made birdie on first 3 holes, and then came the dreaded 4th. I had a wind that required a draw in order to find the fairway, but luckily I pulled it off and then just wanted to find the center of the green on the approach. After I sank the 38 foot bending putt was when the rhythm really started. From there the first 10 holes were all birdied. That’s when I said to myself, wow, I might actually pull this off.

Then the nerves really set in, with pars on 11, 12 and 14, I started to sweat a little. But then I sank a nice 15 foot putt on 15 to get my hopes back up. So I finished with a 57 thinking, well I put myself in contention and that's more than I could ever ask for!

I’m really excited to meet the folks at WGT at Olympic Club next year and maybe even play some golf while I am in San Francisco. I’m also planning on meeting some fellow members of the Deviations in San Francisco so it should make for a memorable trip. And finally, I would like to thank WGT and the USGA for giving us the opportunity to compete in major tournaments such as the U.S. Open, my hats off to all the WGT crew for introducing me to such an awesome golf game!
