So I joined a new CC and started playing tournaments.

I joined Nice and Friendly and so far they have lived up to their name.

problem is I have become very good at putting with the scale that has the green shaded area.

in the tournaments the putter pal is just percentages and I am STRUGGLING BIG TIME

    HELP please.

    thanks

Below is a starting point. there are many variables though and it takes time to implement this in a way that works for you. No formula will be perfect for all situations. As stated... This is a starting point.

Hmm, never used percentages. Always used addition/subtraction in inches plus feel. Feel has come through experience.

Those percentages you provided are off, according to my experience.

    For eg:

A 7ft putt on 7s greens I hit 10. For a ten ft putt I hit 13.5. For a 20ft putt I hit 24.5. As you can see a percentage figure of 120% won't get you to the hole.

On a 10s green 10 for 10 and then a gradual easing off the longer the putt.

On a 13s green any distance up to 7 I hit the the full distance. For a 10ft putt I hit very near 8.5. For a 15 ft putt I hit 11.

The examples I've given are for a level putting surface.

The most common error I see when playing alt games on 13s greens are putts inside 8ft that don't reach the hole. If its 5 up 2 then hit 7, not 4 lol.

Here's a funny thing: Whistler Hole 12, a steep uphill putt to make birdie. Say for example the distance is 10ft but up 8in, that works out at 18ft. 10s green I'll hit 16, 13s green I'll hit 15.5...Go figure.

Same distance but reverse elevation you need a 3ft hit for 10s and no hope for 13s lol. Merion Hole 5 comes to mind.

There is no magic formula, but yes like you said one needs a starting point, and mine is as stated above.

Good stuff, Mike. And your stats speak for themselves. You are a very good putter. You're about 1400 rounds ahead of me. I hope my stats will be similar by the time I have played that many more rounds, with maybe a little bit lower on 3 putts. 😉

The "feel" thing is an excellent point. There are so many factors that go into how I look at a putt and that all comes from experience. I didn't even try to explain how I come up with my final number, but on the 7' putt you used as an example above on 7 greens, I would actually hit it 9.6' not 8.4'. I always add a foot before using the percentage on uphill putts, level putts, and downhill with green speeds slower than about 10.5 when the putts are less than 20'. 😂🤣 How do you even start to explain all that for different situations? 😂

I also admit that I could do a lot better at making my first putt if I wasn't so cautious about not 3 putting. I'm too cautious. When I first started to improve as a player, I set eliminating 3 putts as a priority. I'm slowly overcoming my caution. 🤣 On the bright side, my 3 putt percentage will be under 1% very soon. Now to get my 1 putt well into the 60's like yours.

As for those percentages for putting... They are a very good starting point.
