Step up into a tee box on a real golf course and what data do you have? Usually just the approximate distance to the hole and, if you are lucky, the location of the hole on the green (up, middle, back). Everything else the player has to use his or her best guesstimate. Step into the tee box at WGT and what data do you have? Always, distance to the hole, actual hole location, wind direction, wind speed, the ability to physically map the actual distance and elevation to the area where you want to land the ball. Whether you plug that data into a spreadsheet, a calculator, or the gray matter between the ears, the player is using that data to calculate the shot. The only difference between the methods is the level of sophistication used. If we were truly playing this game totally by feel we would not be presented this data for our use. WGT provides this data because they intend for the player to use it. The whole idea behind tier progression is who is able to use this data the most proficiently. Would be fairly difficult to attain the scores that are routinely posted without it. We are all given a fair start as we are all provided with the same data. Each one of us elects to process it in the manner in which we are most comfortable. The spreadsheet user has no inherent advantage over the mental estimator.
