I just noticed when playing two shots from the rough -

first was a nearly (90-95%) full powered shot with the 6i club at 9th bethpage black hole, from the trees above the first bunker which went just 80 yds. (2nd cut rough 40-50% LIE)

the second one was a full strength shot directly after the previous one, played from just before the hole, just in between the bunkers, with the LW club - again 2nd cut rough 40-50% LIE - which went 40yds (uphill!)

both shots were made with the clubs from the standard starter package and wind was pretty much the same.

Is there any guideline how much length you do loose with which club, or is it just lottery? I also noticed this kind of behaviour, when chipping from the 1st cut roughs around the greens.

40-50% Rough seems to have much more effect for lower clubs.  I don't have a formula, however I generally find a loss of about 20-30% seems average on 8iron -wedges.  30-40% on 3-7 irons.  Won't generally use woods out of rough, you get more out of the irons.

30-40% Rough runs about 1/2 that effect.

    20-25% Won't generally have a noticable effect.

Let me know if you get different results, but this generally works for me.
