I understand that there are penalties in golf for miss hit balls, and bigger ones on the best courses, but.... giving a lost ball penalty for going in the bushes is unresonable , especially when to get the better balls wgt charges money, the balls dont last that long as it is, to take one for a ball in the bushes is unreasonable, an unplayable lie is a better and less punitive penalty!

I agree ... unplayable lie and a drop with one stroke penalty ...

I agree too!  That's a wizbang idea right there.

I guess you guys haven't had a chance to get up-close and personal with a real gorse bush.  Poking around inside one would not be advisable. =)

Suffice it to say they are some pretty nasty bushes.  They are extremely dense, some can be quite large in area and look at those spines.  This isn't your everyday bush!  Any attempt to reach one's hand into a gorse bush might result in a loss of hand, let alone the ball. =)

In order to declare a ball unplayable it must be identified according to USGA rules.  There is little hope of finding the ball let alone identifying it when it makes it's way into one of these things.  They are that dense.  Currently the game does not have unplayable lie functionality, so you'll be sent back to the tee if you land in one of these bushes.

    Avoid them at all costs!

You really can't see farther inside the bush than a foot or two, so a ball retriever isn't going to help you out there.  You wouldn't be able to see the ball.  =)

I understand the lost ball in the bushes at STA but I do have a hang up with the stroke and distance penalties on Kiawah.  For instance, 13th hole anything right is a lost ball and return to tee.  I have played the course in real life and it was clearly marked as a hazard which would allow for a drop at point of entry.  I also hit into the burn (creek) on STA #1 and got a lost ball, return to tee.

I don't mind the $ cost of losing a ball when I hit a bad shot, but stroke and distance is a bit much when ball lands in what should be a lateral or water hazard.  Frustration only compounds when these penalties are levied after a meter spike or freeze is the major culprit.

My last 2 SA RGs I've blindly just teed off right away only to realize on the downswing that I had dunked it because of the tailwind.  At least the last one led to my first In the Drink award.

Jake, I agree with you on the lateral and water hazards.  There's certainly been more than once that I've went back to the tee or another unfavorable location when I know I should be closer to the hazard entry point.

i agree 100% just had to bag a back 9 rg at kia after getting the first three only to have the meter get totally jacked up. the ball did a one hopper into hazard, which is marked as a hazard, drop at point of entry 1 stroke penalty. here we are forced back to tee, long story short i was caught with no more balls (my fault) then had the meter jag another one in the drink goodnight thanks for playing. please fix wgt. ty JB
