I score a 3 under and my average goes UP.What´s going on??

  I´ve been practicing hard lately and scoring well. My average dropped to 66.20. Today  I shot a 3under par on the back nine at Kiawah. Would someone explain to me why my score went UP from 66.20 to 66.39????

  Something's gone wrong here I fancy

  Older scores roll off as new ones come on. I think the average is your previous 12 rounds so if you posted a 33 on Kiawah and a 31 rolled off this can happen.

  I´m sorry Tarheels, maybe I´m being a bit thick, but I´m not with the logic on this!.

  I´ve just hit a 2under on the same nine and my score has gone up AGAIN, from66.39 to 66.49!!

  What do i need to score to reduce my score!! this just doesn´t seem correct to me.:(

  Your 2 under on the back nine at Kiawah equals a 34. Extend that to a full 18 and it equals 68. If your average is around 66, of course it would go up if you shoot a 68. You need to start shooting 3 under or 4 under for the back 9 to see your average come down.

  Let me give it a try.... Your average is based on the best 10 scores out of your last 14 rounds, with heavier weighting applied to the last 3 or so rounds.  Here is how I see your situation:

  CASE #1 -- Your last 14 rounds prior to the last 2 were... 35, 34, 35, 32, 34, 34, 34, 33, 32 ,33 ,33 ,40 ,34 and 31.

  CASE #2 -- Your last 14 rounds prior to the last 1 were... 33, 35, 34, 35, 32, 34, 34, 34, 33, 32 ,33 ,33 ,40 and 34. (Notice the 31 dropped off :^(   )

  Using a rough calculation I figured out a while ago:

  1. Double each 9 hole score and drop highest 4:

  CASE #1:  70, 68, 70, 64, 68, 68, 68, 66, 64 ,66 ,66 ,80 ,68, 62

  CASE #2:  66, 70, 68, 70, 64, 68, 68, 68, 66, 64 ,66 ,66 ,80 ,68 (that nice 62 is gone)

  2.  Apply weighting to the latest 3 rounds and average it out like this:

  CASE #1:  (68x3 +64x2 +68x1.5 +68 +68 +66 +64 +66 +66 +62) / 13.5 = 66.22

  CASE #2:  (66x3 +68x2 +64x1.5 +68 +68 +68 +66 +64 +66 +66) / 13.5 = 66.37!!

  Hope that clears things up!

  *edit*  As for your latest score... you bumped a 68 out and put a 68 back in, in your heaviest weighted position!

  Simple math my friend , your average is 66, shoot a 69 and your average goes up. Shoot a 64 and your average goes down. Works that way for everyone, no exceptions, unless you're using calculus, or trigonometry to keep score.

  Look deeper sir, his reference to a 3 under was over 9 holes, which is a 33 on Kiawah, which translates to a 66 over 18 holes, I can kind of see why he asked the question.

  So, essentially, it's a moving average.  i.e., It's a weighted average of your last 10 rounds with the last score falling off continuously as you add a new score.

  Exactly... so, if you drop a really good score off the back end when you post a pretty good, but not great, score, your average can still go up.
