To each his own, bu i never advise or recommend doing what i myself did not or would not do, especially if someone is trying to be selective in how they spend credits.

Well, if his goal is to be selective, then we're back to my original advice. Save the credits. He doesn't need a new 3 wood.

Maybe Robert, i just discovered that there are some holes you handcuff yourself on not having a 3wd in the bag.

Again that doesnt mean there are lots of them but it can cost you several shots on one hole, as i discovered as a tour pro in my first VT while in TPC, had i known 3wd was the correct shot i avoid trees, deep rough, and scrambling to save bogey.

I also concede i recall early club advice to ditch the hybrid and get 3 wedges, and i was working towards the same ping irons at l59, he is... no one ever remotely suggested 4 wedges.  But every person plays differently and equip their bag to their preference... some people carry hybrids, most dont... it is preference...

It is about sharing the options, i raised the question or point because i had never seen this advised or recommended before but i dont try to cover all the threads all the time...

In most situations a punched driver gets 3 wood results. And think about it. You might use the 3 wood 1 or 2 tiles per round versus 8 to ten times for a fourth wedge. Because remember. From pro tees and sometimes master tees WGT is a driver/wedge game.

Then how can you lobby against something you know nothing about? I never owned a store-bought 3W until I made Legend because it simply isn't needed from the shorter tees while that 4th wedge expands the coverage where you need it most-the short game.

his driver is mid flight and can get caught in trees on various courses, been there tried that and wished i knew to hit 3wd instead

The guy is a TP!! Point out ANY tree that's in the way off those shorter tees, it just isn't a a factor from junior tees. The only thing you cost yourself with no 3W is maybe an eagle attempt on a few holes. I'll trade that occasional effort for a club I know I'll use a lot.

But that's the thing. He already has a three wood. Upgrading it now would not be a significant upgrade.

I had read about the 4 wedge approach before. And it's not uncommon to read people say that you really don't need a 3 wood until you get to Legend tier.

I also have the R11 3 wood, which like the irons is a bit quick. I'm going to start using a slower ball which will obviously help,

I believe I opted for the L51 Cally Fusion 3wd around that time frame, but it is now the Rogue Sub Zero still at L51.  with an even better meter speed than when I bought mine.  I don't think you would regret this upgrade.

#martino991... I stand by my suggestion above, given you asked for a "suitable replacement" for your current 3wd.  I personally found that this 3wd was playable even after I was promoted to Legend.  I don't see much value or point in covering all the course management scenarios when 3wd can be a better option than driver... and was definitely more beneficial to me personally than adding what  amounts to as a 5th wedge given you already carry 3 matching wedges and a PW with your irons, which you can also use in punch mode for in between distances.  The same goes for the Ping L59 PW.  However, if you would like specific tips or scenarios where I used the 3 wd off of the tour pro and master tee boxes send me a friend request.

There are a variety of ways to play and all kinds of combinations that can be used... I personally found it helpful to build my bag for the level I was striving for...  unlike you, I didn't even buy a driver or 3 wd until I reach L51 and L55.  The L59 Ping irons were also my first set of irons.  This was my first inquiry into clubs.

The key difference for me, I was able to use coin rental gear that saved me time and valuable credits by not purchasing lower end equipment that would be quickly outdated.  That strategy worked for me, because I started on the mobile game where I discovered WGT, it saved me thousands of credits on lower tier club purchases while I saved up for the clubs I was hoping would get me to Legend tier where the game seems to get the most challenging.

WGT members that only play on the desktop computer may experience things differently.  Robert is an exception, I know of, as he is a mobile specialist and plays on an Ipad I believe.  But players with a feel for the game, tend to get promoted fairly quickly so you can easily find yourself doing multiple equipment upgrades if you don't think things through.

Asking your question and seeking advice is part of thinking things through... as you can see there are a variety of views... WGT would love for you to upgrade your clubs frequently and often and even buy clubs you only use for a month or so before upgrading again.  While you do get some "resale" value it still helps to think through your decisions.  Best of luck...

oh, if you visit the link... you will note on page 2 I believe #alosso  recommended upgrading your 3wd first as a "budget driver"  as the rational goes it was the most economical choice rather than driver... a good reliable 3wd from the forward tees could be used off of the tee box and the fairway serving you multiple purposes and double value... I believe the popular choice was the L19 Cally big bertha.  You are far beyond this stage and facing slightly different decisions.

I am moving on send me a friend request if you need anything further, it is too hard to "inform or teach" old dogs new tips or tricks... or so it seems... : )

Did you really just say that? Do you really think you're giving sound advice pushing the OP to spend silly money on something he doesn't need?

You need to get over yourself, you have a long way to go. The OP spending money at this stage is pretty much throwing it away because there's nothing that's going to improve his game until he gets those high lofted clubs. Poor advice on the 3W.

If you are going to have a 3W it's a good idea to have the best 3W. This is the 3W I would buy at your level and I think that is good advice.

Your PW is going to be just as good as a fourth wedge; the fourth wedge just isn't that good. I own it. I used it. I also owned the same irons that you have now. I would upgrade the 3W and wouldn't even think twice about it.

If you play primarily CTTH, 4 wedges may be optimal for some courses; in which case buy the 4th wedge too. LOL!

If you had unlimited credits what would you buy? This should guide you as to what clubs to get. Whether you can afford it or not is another story.

As you progress to higher levels conventional wisdom is to dump the hybrid and add a 3rd wedge. That is good advice. At the lower levels however, you can still use a hybrid and two wedges and that hybrid will help get you out of the muck. I didn't do that coming up, I did the same thing that you did; 3 wedges and a 3W. You will be perfectly fine with that setup.

In reality, the real game starts at the back tees (Legend tier). For those that are serious about playing it's a race to get to legend, and a race to level up to get decent enough clubs to compete at those tees and green speeds (starts happening around level 70 and 80). Once you have clubs and balls that you are going to keep for awhile map your clubs. That's your ultimate goal.

Now more than ever there are ways to level up very quickly and if you have a CC or own one you can setup back tee tournaments all day long. You don't have to wait until you reach Legend.

If you have unlimited credits upgrade everything on your way there. If you don't have unlimited credits then pick your spots and that 3W is good upgrade in either scenario. Good luck.

When I advocated 4 wedges I neglected to add that they weren't just any 4 wedges, they were all the Satin oil can finished ones that are no longer available. They've been replaced by better wedges but the real advantage is what I referred to as the coverage. Using all 5 shots with them I was able to cover any yardage all the way up to what the 3i hit-220.

Now, from the junior tees, all you have to do is get the ball in the fairway off the tee. In the event you miss the fairway and find the rough, proper course management says recover, get up and down to save par. A 3i punch (or less) gets you back in play and your up and down saves the par because you can cover any yardage that 3i punch gets you.

In the end, it's always whatever works for you. I went to 4 wedges back when only because I realized I never used the 3W. I had a good driver and wasn't using 3,4 and 5 irons very much because I was driving past where you'd use them. That's when it occurred to me to get that 4th wedge and it made an immediate difference. For me, anyway.  :-)
