Canadian whisky brand Crown Royal has nabbed the title of World Whisky of the Year 2016, for its Northern Harvest Rye, the first time the honour has gone to a Canadian brand.

"Crown Royal Northern Harvest pops up out of nowhere and changes the game," said Murray in a statement. "To say this is a masterpiece is barely doing it justice."

Murray gave the whisky a mark of 97.5 out of 100.

    ....a toast to you all...:)

I personally prefer 40 creek small batch...they don't export it, unfortunately, so you will have to take my word that it is excellent and "smooth as spring water"...

The Crown Royal blend that won the award is new...I will defo have to try it, depending on the cost...which I think will now go way up after this award...lol

Apparently Jack Daniels chose not to compete this year.

    MichaelStroke:

While Scotch whiskey has often been considered the benchmark of top whiskeys, Jack Daniels is a fine Tennessee offering, and there are some decent Bourbons out of Kentucky...(although purists often refer to Bourbon as bad Scotch). American Rye whiskey is made from actual Rye, while, ironically, Canadian Rye Whiskey does not necessarily have to be made from Rye. I was a rye drinker, but haven't tried any on the list here...probably too expensive..and there is the old saying that the finest libation is simply the one someone else pays for...lol

Anyway, the top 5 award winning whiskeys for 2016 are:

    1. Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye, Canada
    2. Pikesville Straight Rye, USA
    3. Midleton Dair Ghaelach, Ireland
    4. William Larue Weller Bourbon (Bot.2014), USA
    5. Suntory Yamazaki Mizunara (Bot.2014), Japan

ps...who would have thought the Japanese would make a better whiskey than the Scots?...lol

We don't make whiskey in Scotland.

If however you want to drink whisky, ours is by far the best.

alas Paul, apparently the experts disagree...at least for 2016...ever thought of making Scottish Sake?...a little tit for tat?...lol

ps...whiskey or whisky...either spelling is correct.

I could be wrong - I was, once, in 1980-something -  but I think you'll find whiskey is Irish while whisky is Scottish - the Irish added the 'e' (in order to distinguish it from the poor quality Scottish version [pulls pin and rolls the grenade through the door]) in the late 19th Century.
