How does match play affect your average score?

  I know match play will affect your average but has anyone worked out exactly how.

  I have just been promoted to Tour Master. My first game was a matchplay against a legend. I won 2 and 1 and was 1 or under for the 8 holes played (counting conceded puts as in).

  My average is now 61. Does this mean if you beat a player in matchplay your "score" counts as the entry average for the opponents tier? What happens if you lose?

  If I am right it seems it is much easier to lower your "average" by playing match play than stroke play. As a players "average" it a lot better than their true average.  As a master I probably average about 70 but as I have played a lot more than 40 round the average of the best 40 rounds is less less than 63 (probably more than that if you exclude matchplay) but if someone beats me at matchplay it is taken as an equal performance to shooting 63.

  as a Hack 1 completed MatchPlay win vs an Amateur or higher = twice 90 score or your best H score when you have one

  as an Amateur 1 completed MatchPlay win vs a Pro or higher = 3 times 80 score or your best A score when you have one

  as a Pro 1 completed MatchPlay win vs a TourPro or higher = 3 times 72 score or your best P score when you have one

  as a TourPro 1 completed MatchPlay win vs a Master or higher = 4 times 67 score or your best TP score when you have one

  as a Master 1 completed MatchPlay win vs a TourMaster or higher = 5 times 63 score or your best M score when you have one

  as a TourMaster 1 completed MatchPlay win vs a Legend or higher = 6 times 61 score or your best TM score when you have one

  as a Legend or higher MatchPlay does not affect on your avg score

  concede putt is allowed ( at an extra hole NOT)

  concede hole is allowed ( 2-2 or 3-3)

  you can lose any times it does not matter

  FWIW, the OP wrote that almost 4 years ago!! He since made Legend and quit playing.

  agree... when you do not win a single MP vs higher tiered players :)

  Actually, match play can affect average. At least below Legend tier it can. I could be wrong, but I think once a person reaches Legend, match play doesn't. But below that it can.

  Below, it does in the sense of brekee's post. I was promoted to Legend by winning two matches against Legends as a TM. I observed that each moved my average by -0.7.

  brekee:

  implies that 12 scores of 64 in my scores list would have been replaced by the best, 58s, cutting off 12x(58-64)/50 = -72/50 = -1.44 from the average which is 2x-0.72. Numbers confirmed!

  It also explains observations that the effect diminishes for multiple matches - the scores dropping out will become lower.

  The second sweet point of my experience was that it helped my CC win a CC match ;)

  Remark:

  Important to know that there are some cases when Avg remains the same (even a lot of MPwins vs higher tiered players)

  eg. You are a new TourMaster with a single 32(64) Ranked TM SPscore and Avg 64

  so your best TM score is 64

  all MPwins vs Legend or higher equals one by one 6 times 64 score

  so you will saturate very soon with the same 64 Avg

  Conclusion:

  better to have no score... or you need a good score before many MPwins vs Ls.

  Just a side note for you to consider:

   

  If you win and lower your avg quicker and obtain a higher tier. You are still a loser in that you have not put in the time with your current tier and therefore are at a disadvantage once you reach the next higher tier.

  You will find your avg will skyrocket and your progress will be hindered as you were not prepared for the next higher tier.

  But that's my opinion for what its worth.
