1312 - Edward III <> House of Plantagenet <> King of England

After the disastrous reign of his father, Edward III restored national unity and pride and made England a feared military power. But he also had to rule England in the midst of fiscal crisis and the Black Death. Though ably assisted, he did not always manage as well with the details of domestic governance. Still, much of his long reign was seen as a kind of golden age.

1597 - Elizabeth Charlotte of the Palatinate ~ Electress of Bavaria

    1600 - Charles I <> House of Stuart <> King of England

Charles I is most famous for being beheaded by Parliament in 1649 after civil war rocked Britain. The path that led him to the scaffold, however, was long and torturous, full of missed opportunities and misplaced loyalties. Whatever his other failings may have been, above all Charles was simply on the wrong side of history; he wanted the sort of monarchy whose time had passed.

1272 ~ Edward I <> House of Plantagenet <> is proclaimed King of England

Edward I is a colossal figure in English history. Called Longshanks, he was indeed tall at over six feet, and every inch a King. He brought to the throne both a warlike spirit and a born administrator's attention to efficiency and fairness. Though flawed, he was undeniably one of the great English kings, and his legacy remains both in England's landscape and its laws.
