Many long-established players forget to clear their caches. I definitely wouldn't take that for granted, and if the game fails to load, it's often precisely because the cache is corrupt following a product update.
Also, I doubt that the error message said, "WGT can't connect to server", which sounds like a self-contradictory paraphrase to me. It might be useful to learn the exact wording of the error message, and where exactly it appears.
