So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Ladies and gentlemen, friends and foes alike... I am leaving a short message here to let those who care ( and those who would get immense joy, otherwise ) know that no, I have not been banned.

I am taking a bit of a leave... I am completely fed up and disgusted... and instead of trying to force a change on something I can't, I will allow a change on something I can.

Because of the complete lack of forum moderation ( ie, letting drunken, profanity laced ramblings stand for more than 5 minutes while innocent, subtlely humourous threads are removed almost immediately) this is no longer a place in which I wish to participate.  The absolute brazen flaunting of multiple accounts along with some of the most daft and inane writings has made visiting WGT a chore and not a pleasure.

And so, until we meet again...  In the classic words of Douglas Adams:

"So long, and Thanks for All the Fish."

    Peace

I can certainly identify with everything you're saying. I'm utterly shocked by what has been unfolding in these forums over the last few hours. It's not as if this was the first weekend; it's been happening nearly every weekend, with almost the precise regularity of a Swiss watch.

I am just as dismayed as you are by what sometimes occurs here: the careless, wholesale deletion of meticulously written forum posts and even entire threads. This is happening all too frequently here, anonymously from the background, while there is no visible moderator presence in these forums. A similar issue is the unwarranted locking of some threads, while other threads, in dozens of redundant copies, are all left unlocked.

If there is an area where TWO is already miles and miles ahead of WGT, it's forum moderation. They have a bunch of people there, clearly identified as moderators, who wouldn't permit 1% of what we get to see here on a regular basis, especially the weekends. The transgressors would have been banned there on the spot.

Let's not blame anyone in particular at WGT; the fault is in the system. You just cannot engage in forum moderation perfunctorily, as a hastily disposed of "side job", next to your "main" duties. If anyone does that, they will bungle forum moderation terribly. They will leave things stand that cannot be tolerated, and will delete legitimate posts and threads. That's because you need time in order to judge, fairly, what is or isn't acceptable in a forum. If you're in a hurry, perpetually forced to make quick decisions, you will unavoidably bungle a moderator's job.

Now here I am, rationally arguing about an issue... But what will be the first thing I'll do after submitting this post? Yup, I'll make an offsite backup of it. That's because I have countless times experienced where any and all WGT forum posts/threads got deleted at random, for no reason given.

By the way: I've never heard a clear answer to the question, "Do these Report Abuse links work at all?" Because it seems to me they don't work.

These forums urgently need moderators clearly designated as such. If there are no resources within WGT to appoint staff to perform the duties, there are forum members who could perform the role. The obvious top candidate is Nivlac, a highly intelligent and capable person, and a universally admired and respected WGT figure. WGT, give the moderator's job to Nivlac, if there is no one on your staff to do the job visibly and non-anonymously on these pages. Everyone will thank you for that, and WGT.com will heave a collective sigh of relief.

Some of us would also get immense joy if you didn't leave for awhile.Don't let a drunk run you off.Surely the WGT has sense enough to remove such ramblings of a drunken fool.Perhaps we need to send an email to the staff of WGT until they sraight this mess out.

With you being a frequent user with valued opinion of most all topics I for one would hate to see you go .You might not want to bow out just yet Snaike.Lets see how this goes before you go.I'm sure the WGT will take care of the problem.

    Stick around,

Yep, I'm a bit annoyed as well about a certain 'someone' and his many forum chats to himself, that include many a swear-word. Normally, I just go 'meh' and ignore it, but today I cracked, and decided to report abuse... which then didn't work.

So tomorrow, I say that EVERYONE who is annoyed at this certain someone sends an e-mail to WGT, saying that he should be banned from the site/forums. (And make sure you you say you're a paying member too.)

WGT can ignore one of us, but they can't ignore dozens of us!

Yeah, that's a great idea! WGT will have a barrage of abuse e-mails asking to get this certain someone banned that they can't ignore. It'd be really cool if each time zone had a specific time at which everyone had to send their e-mails at the exact same time.

The problem is, this is not the first or second or third time this stuff has happened. There are a few (that I know of) members that have tried to tackle this problem before to no avail.

I usually see members that contribute in a constructive way getting warnings and suspensions and the trolls and spammers carry on.

I still read the forums but contribute much less because of this.

Question to WGT ... Why aren't the forums more closely moderated?

These forums will never be run properly until someone finds the time to do so, period. The worst forums abuse always happens at the weekends. I ask: is there a WGT staff member paid for weekend forums moderation? I venture to say, there's no one like that. Yes, we've seen weekend forum interventions, but it seemed obvious we were only disturbing someone's (probably WGTalex's) well-deserved weekend rest. Emergency moderation is not the same as regular moderation. These forums need regular weekend moderation, not only moderation in emergencies.

You just can't moderate forums in a slapdash manner, by cursorily looking at submitted forum posts, then deleting left and right anything that seems suspicious to you. By necessity, you're going to mistake humour for insults, while failing to capture true offences. Neither is it enough just to react passively to submitted abuse reports (even if abuse reports worked in these forums, which they apparently don't). Nothing is more frequent on the Internet than a gang of, say, 10 folks, agreeing to complain about someone just because that one person holds an uncomfortable opinion. A moderator must not be swayed by majority opinion and readily ban anyone without first carefully examining the issue with his/her own eyes.

The proper moderator is one who is himself/herself actively involved in day-to-day discussions. Such a person is extremely unlikely to mistake humour for abuse, or to allow trolls / spammers / cheaters to return to the scene repeatedly in order to wreak more and more damage with an almost frightening regularity. One of the persons Snaike was writing about is even happy to post in this thread, jeering gleefully. Trolls and cheaters have got used to the fact that they can get away with almost anything on WGT.com. It's a sad state of affairs.

Again: Nivlac is the ideal candidate for a moderator, if WGT have no one for the role on their own staff. Nivlac has confirmed he wouldn't charge WGT a cent (or a golf ball) for his services.
