My layperson's thinking about this is that this is exactly how VEM affects a ranked game. You start off on one plateau and depending on how you do, that plateau changes. Score well to start and the game tightens up. Hack your way to a start and it seems to finish strong, like the game loosens up on you.
And then there's those rounds where VEM takes a break and you shoot 18 under. LOL
