I know this may have been answered before, but I suck at searching the forums.

My CC just got the shot pal meter and my game played now sucks

I know my math cant be that bad, or maybe it is

how do you math junkies do it?

hole 175 yds 5 feet rise 20-23 straight head wind

this is how I do calculate it

    5/3= 1.667 yds

    175+ 1.667= 176.667

    23/2= 11.5

    176.667+11.5= 188.167yds

now my ball spin is a 5 I add 5 yds

    188.167+5= 193.167 yds

now I take my club distance of 205 yds

    193.167/ 205= 0.942

so I hit my meter at said 94% power I tend to landing about 20-30 yrds shy.

So here is the Question where am I messing up at?

    thank you

    Way too much math.

That was aprox about a 194/195 yd shot, get to know your clubs and ball combination along with spin to reach that distance......................no easy answers you just need to map the distances of your clubs and ball of choice combination.....................

lots of variables... in addition to mapping your equipment, getting to know individual holes and courses pays off, they all have different characteristics for example you may simply add 5-10 yds on a particular hole (after calculations) that normally you would not do.

what stands out to me in your calculation is 23/2 = 11.5 which I assume is adjustment for direct head wind? for me, at long distances I tend to calculate for the full number and even more if I'm using full backspin to try and stop the ball.  maybe for your equipment and experience it's different.  -Keith

That number doesn't play that way. The 5 is just a representation of how much spin that club has and seriously changes the yardage, depending on the wind.

This is not as important as knowing how far that 205 club carries. Try plugging that carry number in and see if the shortage makes sense.

The too much math comment was a good one. You can get really frustrated trying to force exact numbers to work. You have to think about how a strong wind like that is going to affect the shot and if you know your carry numbers you'll have a better idea of what to hit.

By way of example, using your example above, I don't use math to figure that out, I think of what club I would hit to get to 175. Happens I have a 180 yard 6i that goes to about 183 with the ball I use and total roll. The carry is only about 176 with no wind so I know whatever I hit, it's going to be bigger than the 6. I could use top spin to force the ball through the wind but I don't think that would help in a wind that strong.

The 5i goes 195 and might be a possibility but that only carries about 185 and with that wind it's surely not going that far. Then again, I don't want it to so this might be the right club.

Now I'm up to a 210 yard 4i which carries about 196. I would use back spin to stop the shot and knock the distance down knowing bs into wind does that. So my choice becomes a full 5 iron with partial back spin or a 4i choked with fbs. This is where the landing plays. Sheesh, more variables. :-)

p.s., I very much like the way my 4i stops dead into wind with back spin so I think I'd probably hit that 4i and back off the swing. JMO.

Adding 50% distance in a headwind?  Yeah, um, no.

You should be using about a 1:1 ratio at 10-14.  Single digits, then closer to 50%.  At 20+ headwinds, you should be multiplying it by somewhere between 1.2 and 1.4.

I can see why you fell incredibly short, based on your input.

Here is one..... the .58 factor.....no matter what shot, or wind, its always .58 with a headwind.

    175 yards + 5 up = 180

    .58 x 1.80 x 20 ( i took the lowest of the winds) = 20.88 ....... 180 + 20.88 = 200.88

As always, balls and clubs will factor in, but it's a good start.

My kind of girl... grip it and rip it.

    LOL

Not sure I like the rip it part ;-)
