When you are in the rough or sand, and there is a shot % that is shown, does that mean you will lose that percentage off however much you hit, or you can expect to get that much of what you hit?

No, the distance loss has nothing to do with the actual numbers.  The lie is just letting you know how much of the ball's surface is covered.  You'll have to get a feel for how each lie plays through practice.

Keep in mind that bunker lies change course to course depending on the type of sand.  Kiawah's dune bunkers play much differently than Bethpage's bunkers, even with the same lie.

So there isn't really any math involved here, and I'm overthinking things.

    thx

Yeah, it's really more of trial and error.

Following the general "in the rough" guide it's usually 1/2 club for the first cut,  1-2 clubs for the 2nd cut and 3 clubs or more for anything at 40-50 or worse.

You could do math if you wanted to, but I personally prefer to play by feel.
