wonder why one cant choose to hit a driver from the fairway?  while a difficult shot in real golf, its not unheard of and not illegal.   since there are so many par fours, that   depending on wind speed and direction, and particularly on bp black,  are unreachable in regulation with driver-three wood, especially  with standard clubs. maybe a risk/reward feature where even slight mishits end up   with  more severe, undesirable  directional results. just a thought.

We are allowed to hit driver off the turf but its a difficult shot at best.  Try it in practice games, try the punch mode and different types of spin to see what that does for you.  As a practical mater, I suspect it would be much harder for WGT to sell upgraded fairway woods, in the pro shop, if it was easy to hit drivers on the fairway.  You can test (rent)  fairway clubs, in the pro shop, many show they will travel nearly as far as some drivers and they are probably much easier to hit.

Of course at Bali Hai it is an option. In real life there are strict requirements to use the shot option. A lie that is elevated upon higher grass, a faultless swing, a memory that reminds one that the shot will usually fade right, and a clear mind that somehow can dictate the the sensability of such a shot. More wedge shots are holed than drivers off the deck that can go and do almost anything except birdies.

99.9% of the time all a 'driver off the deck' does is make you replace boards.

You can use punch for the driver off the deck, but it doesn't net you very much more than a hybrid or 3W, and has a much lower trajectory.
