Putting Tip: Distance Control

PLEASE NOTE -

This tutorial was written for the WGT Starter Putter on Standard Green Speeds. If you are on slow or fast greens or using a different putter then the ranges and "movements" discussed within will vary for you. However, regardless of what the green speed is or the putter you are using the formula to discover your ranges and movements is the same.

The ability to putt well is the most important tool in your bag because putting represents a whopping 42% of your score.

As Josh Zander says, "Distance control is the key to great putting. The speed you hit the putt determines its line; therefore, every putt other than a straight putt is determined by how hard you hit it."

This guide will show you how to more consistently control your distance with the putter, so that you can shave a few more strokes off your score.

If you're just getting started on the World Golf Tour then you may be having a little trouble getting used to the distance control. Chances are you've played a golf game with some sort of meter before, however most of the time there were little markers to indicate 50%, 75% and so on. Not so here on WGT. You are greeted with a blank swing meter with no visual aids what so ever.

On the real golf course we gauge the power of putts by how far back the putter is drawn in the backswing, but what you may not know is that you can do the same thing on the virtual course. Check out the pictures below.

On the 30 foot scale, the Starter putter has a total of 5 backwards movements.

Obviously this is the rest position. Click your mouse and drag it slowly forward.

Right about here, we see the first movement.

Now the 2nd... (see how the putter's back is touching the line)

The 3rd... (the back is crossing the line now)

The 4th... (now the front of the putter is on the line)

Finally, the 5th motion back happens when you reach full strength. You can see nearly the entire putter is over the line now. Try this out for yourself. You will clearly be able to see the distinct movements.

This was a 30 foot scale with 5 equal backwards movements. 30 divided into 5 is 6, so each backwards movement of the putter translates into 6 feet of power. On the 60 foot scale there are 7.5 movements, each representing 8 feet (up to 56, the last one is worth only 4 feet because it's a half movement). On the 150 foot scale there are 10 equal movements with each representing 15 feet of power.

TIP: Watch the green speeds! On faster greens you may find your 6 foot putts travel an additional foot or two. You'll need to adjust your ranges for the varying green speeds.

If you're using a putter other than the Starter, you'll need to apply the formula and figure out the movements for yourself. Draw the putter back slowly and start counting the times your avatar moves. Note the space between the increments to see if they are the same or not. If they are the same simply divide the number of feet (30, 60, 90 etc) by the number of movements. If all but the last movement is equal then most likely the last movement is a half and you'll need to do a little guessing. The 60ft Starter putter scale has 7 full movements and 1 half movement. If we multiply 7.5 x 8, we get 60. After a few putts of verification, you'll know if you guessed right. To aid in your guessing, remember that WGT has yet to release a putter where the movements (and half-movements) did not break down into whole numbers. No decimals.

TIP: When you purchase a new putter, always map your distances first in a practice round!

Having plenty of speed is important, because an ideal putt does not fall in the front door drunk. If you're not familiar with the phrase 'Never up, never in', it's all about leaving your putt short. You'll never go in the hole if you don't get it there, so good putts will always have enough speed to run 2 or 3 feet beyond the hole. The added speed helps the putt 'hold the line' and it will roll more true.

When it comes to elevation changes, the general rule of thumb is to add 1 foot of power for every inch uphill and to subtract 1 foot for each inch downhill. Please remember that this is not an exact formula. You'll also need to keep in mind green speed and tinker with it to find the right touch that works for you.

Downhill putts generally go slow. We strike them with less force because we don't want to ram it way past the hole. When you are putting downhill, expect the break to have a more noticeable effect. Conversely, uphill putts move fast because they are struck firmly. When you're putting uphill, you're not usually worried about going too far past the hole, so don't be afraid to hit it. Give it a good stroke and expect less break than normal. Familiarize yourself with the topography of the greens and try to remember where the best spots are to put yourself in position for a straight uphill putt every time. Uphill is always preferred.

Finally, always... ALWAYS pay extra special attention to the color of the putting grid. Black sections are flat, blue sections indicate an uphill swing and red sections indicate downhill. The more vibrant the color, the more severe the change in elevation. Look at the picture below...

You've probably seen this putt before. This is on Kiawah's 3rd hole when your approach shot lands short of the pin. It looks like a pretty innocent putt. The break is minimal as you can see by my aim however, I see the vast majority of players leave this putt short and here's why.

Look at the info box (the blue box). The hole is 12 feet away from me and it's telling me that I have 0 inch uphill putt. Good spot to be, but it's lying to me. You should always treat a 0 inch uphill putt as a 1 inch uphill putt. If you look closely at my aim line, you can see that it is gradually changing to blue as it nears the hole. In fact, it actually starts to change about 2 feet from the hole. We know that blue on the grid indicates uphill, so this supposedly flat putt actually has an uphill swing right at the very end! Most putts are moving slowly when they're only 2 feet away. Once they hit the uphill section they lose momentum fast and the putt winds up short. Keep an eye out for this in the future and be sure to compensate for it when you see it.

TIP: A golfer's notepad is his best friend! Don't be afraid to jot down tendencies when you see them so you can be better prepared for the next time you face a similar putt.

That's about all I have right now. I didn't touch on compensating for break but, that's not really something I can give you tips for. Once you learn to control your distance well, figuring out the break becomes a lot easier. I hope this helps some of the players out there who've been having a little trouble getting the hang of putting.

Remember folks, you drive for show, but you putt for dough!

Beta Test:Definition

The logo next to WGT on the game window says 'Beta'. So, WGT folks, please take note of the following:

Beta Test: Second level, external pilot-test of a product (usually a software) before commercial quantity production. At the beta test stage, the product has already passed through the first-level, internal pilot-test (alpha test) and glaring defects have been removed. But (since the product may still have some minor problems that require user participation) it is released to selected customers for testing under normal, everyday conditions of use to spot the remaining flaws. ~BusinessDictionary.com

Beta Test: A test for a computer product prior to commercial release. Beta testing is the last stage of testing, and normally can involve sending the product to beta test sites outside the company for real-world exposure or offering the product for a free trial download over the Internet. Beta testing is often preceded by a round of testing called alpha testing. ~Webopedia.com

Note the highlights, equating to prior to commercial production. You're now charging pretty hefty sums of money for a product in a game clearly still in the Beta stage. Heck, you are still messing around with where on the screen to place the icon for removing the flag. This product is not nearly finished, and I don't find it all that ethical to continue to charge your 'free' testing squad (namely us) to work out all the kinks in your game. Yes, yes I know we can play the game for free, but in order to test out all the product, we have to pay. If everyone played for free as it stands right now, you'd not have anyone to try out that brand new Ping V2 Rapture Pro set now would you?

Charging donation fees for entering tournaments with prize giveaways is one thing, but charging $32.00 USD for the newest clubset and a whopping $1.10 for a 3-pack of the newest balls that last about 6 rounds is not really in the spirit of what the Beta phase is all about. Sure, once the Beta is over, I have no issue with your pricing whatsoever, but this is not the Final release. This is Beta, and that implies by definition, 'free'. We should not be paying like this to test out your product. You get our real-world testing services for free. If you want to go commercial on us, then call the game done and release it.

Think about that as you continue to raise prices and reduce tournament purse amounts.

P.S. to my detractors who would say, "Oh Tibbets, you ungrateful jerk, stop your whining and be grateful for what you've won", I will say that I am speaking up on behalf of the 99.9% of the other players out there who don't have a 4000 credit stockpile to throw around messing with all the new equipment. This company has had millions of dollars of funding to create this game, so we really don't need to hold a bake-sale here to buy balls and clubs. If we do, then we need to be asked for our help, not just priced by mandate in overnight updates.

New ball prices

The effective price of the GI-SD balls is ~ 6x as much as the GID when you factor in the durability being slashed in half. This seems a little out of line to me. I already had to cut my friends list in half, because I can't afford to be losing balls due to the friends list lag when it costs me 6x as much $$$.

I also can't justify burning up 3 packs of balls anymore trying to compete w/ tibb and company in the weekly unlimited tourney when first prize doesn't even buy me 2 golf balls.

What is next, 2$ sleeves next update? I can go play 18 holes of real golf in 4 hours, and use 1-2 balls for 6$, now it damn near costs me that much to use GISD balls for 4 hours.

Master Tier is Killing Me

Holy Mackeral. The master tier is killing me.

Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining. I like the challenge. I am just struggling. I got to master in a few weeks and had my average down to around 65 as a pro. I'm now up to a 71.15. Yikes. +6 strokes in 4 days.

Is it just me or once you are in the master tier, this is a whole new game?

If any of you masters have tips for a fellow struggling master, I would love to hear them. The way I'm playing I even hate to use the term master. (I'm playing like a hack!)

Player drops out

If a player is disconnected during the course of play at the end when the screen pops up it rewards him with the win with a score of zero.

Why is this game freezing all the time?

During match play the drop down menu is blank. I cannot report from

the screen because that doesn't work either. I can reconnect but after 3

reconnects I forfeit. (whoever does it last will forfeit). This is happening every day.

This happens on a T1 line and DSL lines. This does not happen in single play.

This is the 3rd time I have asked about this problem. Is there an answer anywhere

out there?

Tour GI-SD Balls

Well, they worked for a few rounds, but after clearing my flash cache these balls are no longer providing any additional spin or distance. Not sure what's up with that, but they definitely stopped providing any of the extras. I also tried equipping different balls and then re-equipping the Tour GI-SD to no avail.

*edit* logged out and back in again and now they are working properly again. Very strange.

New Awards

Just started working on some of the new stuff. Was curious about scrambles anyway, but just found out that I have 2,886, while Mr. Tibbs has 2894. Wondering what some of your numbers are, as I miss the fairway more than most people. Also, it seems that we get rewarded for some of the not so good stuff, like hitting the rough/sand/water, but not for chipping one in from 27 yards out. Any thoughts on that? I don't have time for this. Gotta go see how many sand saves I've got....

THE WGA TOUR is a season of weekly tournaments of stroke play and match play. You'll earn points for finishing in the top 20 of a tournament, and the points you earn place you in a race for the WGA TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP at the end of the season where the top 20 players will play for the WGA CUP title.

Tournaments are made up of 3 types:

WGA Tournament - 2 rounds of 9-hole Stroke Play
World Golf Championship Tournament - 3 rounds of 9-hole Stroke Play with cut made after 2 rounds
Major Tournament - 3 rounds of 9-hole Stroke Play with cut made after 2 rounds

The WGA Points system are different for each type of tournament with the Major tournaments having most points allocated.

There are 2 PLAYOFF tournaments at the end of season where the points awarded are 3 times the regular tournaments.

The WGA Points are reset after the PLAYOFF tournaments for the top 20 players who will play in the WGA TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP for the WGA CUP title.

THE CUT LINE - is set at Even Par, and there's a total of 36 players who is at and above this cut line. Since the leader score is at -12 and the 20th place is at -4, I didn't see any point of stretching the cut line any further as the players outside the cut line would not have much of a chance to catch up.

DISCONNECTION DURING GAME - I understand that this have been a common problem for all the players so here are some guidelines how to deal with this situation:

Scores on all the holes completed up to the point of disconnection should be recorded manually.
Replay the round and play up to the point of disconnection, scores up to this point are to be discarded. From then on continue to record score until the round is completed.
If disconnection takes place in the middle of playing a hole then that hole should be played again. The score should be recorded from that hole onward until the end of the round
Save and post the scorecard after completing the round but in your post give abrief summary of your recorded score before the disconnection and after. This is important as the scorecard only reflected the last part of your replay round.

Overhead Minimap No Longer Showing Opponent Names & Distances

Starting from today's update, when you hover your mouse over the minimap in the right bottom corner of the game window, you no longer get to see your opponents' names and distances. This is confusing, especially in foursomes. You only see 4 dots, 3 of them anonymous.

Can you please restore the previous, well & tried functionality? Whenever you hovered the mouse over any dot on the minimap, it would tell you whose golfball it was, and the current distance to pin for that ball. Thank you.

Match play challenge-posting scores

I believe people who want to play for credits will not post good scores away from match play challenges, doing the opposite what people do now, mainly post poor scores not good ones so there averages rise, or not many will play them, so if they are in pro tier no incentive to go to master tier an amateur could do the same just post poor scores so he stays there & lots would play him for credits but he`s a lot better than meets the eye like a wolf in sheeps clothing.

New Personal Best, Drive-Putt bug

Among the new award notifications is one for personal bests for drives and putts. These notifications are in error however, since my longest drive and putt far exceed what are being listed as personal bests, and it seems that each round is recording a new personal best every time, even though the drives/putts exceeded those distances in earlier rounds.

See, I hit a drive 312.25 for a 'personal best' then next round hit a drive 280.56 for a 'personal best'. Same with the putts, 7.49 then 2.23.

Your site is becoming a most grotesque billboard.

I keep getting this most annoying popup ad for skycaddie.
It does nothing to make your game pleasureable. Quite the contrary, it is an extraordinary, unpleasant addition.

How about a banner airplane in the distance the banner displaying "This hole brought to you by BLueSkie BS CO."

How about "McBurgers Healthy Lowfat BS Patties" tee markers.

I understand your need to make your cash through promotions, but plastering ads in the game screen is, in my humble opinion, shameless plugs, in your face cheap shots.

Would it cost as much for an ad removal option as you take in from est 100000 views per day? How about 1/100 credit everytime I want a reverse view? That would be about 1c per round.

I suppose I should not have expected any different; it's a shame to watch a site with so much potential go down the Ad-Week tubes.

Can I put Google ads on my profile?

I just purchased these clubs and the flight pattern is crazy. They fly lower and harder than a punch shot and that is with every iron with full backspin. I tried switching from full to punch and back to full and there was no change.
